Concerto Competition 2018 (formerly Young Artist Solo Competition)

Auditions are held in February each year, and the three-member BCO Audition Committee chooses a winner to be featured in the orchestra's May concert. Winners receive a $500 prize. Other prize benefits include a high quality audio recording of the concert, and/or local media interviews and school tours, as appropriate.

Eligibility: The Burlington Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition is open to Vermont residents, students with a permanent VT address enrolled in an out of state college/university/conservatory and any student currently enrolled in a VT college/university up to 21 years of age (born after May 12, 1996). Residents of neighboring states may apply if their private music teacher is a Vermont resident or if the student is or was a full-time member of Vermont Youth Orchestra or Green Mountain Youth Symphony. Students must have permission from their private instructor to enter the competition. Previous winners of the competition are not eligible.

Guidelines for entering the Competition:
Prepare a concerto or a single movement from a longer concerto that is up to 12 minutes total.

Small exceptions to the length requirement to accommodate a concerto are acceptable, but need to be cleared in advance with BCO Audition Chairperson.

Solo concertos and concertos featuring two or three soloists (i.e. double or triple concertos) are acceptable.

Orchestra instrumentation available is strings(66441), woodwinds, two horns, two trumpets and timpani(2222-2200). Pieces that require additional instruments (trombones, tuba, percussion, etc) are not acceptable.

For the audition, the entire work (meaning movement or entire concerto) must be performed. The audition must be accompanied by a pianist.

Memorization is not required, but is strongly recommended.

The concerto must be approved by the student's private instructor and the BCO Audition Chairperson. Advance inquiries by the student's teacher can be made to Betsy LeBlanc (etmleb@gmail.com) and are strongly encouraged.
