John Dunlop grew up in Burlington before earning degrees at Oberlin Conservatory and the San Francisco Conservatory. His teachers have included Norman Fischer, Bonnie Hampton and Richard Kapuscinski. He returned to the Champlain Valley in 1989 and joined the VSO, where he now plays principal cello. He also is principal in the Opera North Orchestra as well as several other local ensembles. He is an active chamber musician and teaches both privately and at Dartmouth College. John is also interested in traditional music styles of the world and enjoy playing guitar and bouzouki for local contradances with his partner Laura Markowitz. He has written and performed soundtracks for several short films, including a documentary on childhood hunger in Vermont.
