Kathleen Oprea began studying the oboe with her father in 1981. As her interest progressed, Katie studied under the tutelage of Neil Boyer during her formative middle and high school years where she appeared as a soloist for both the Vermont Youth Orchestra as well as the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. She continued her studies with Neil Boyer at the University of Southern Maine and later with Mark Weiger at the University of Iowa, before studying under Cesar Ognibene at the Conservatoire National de Region de Lyon in France. Throughout her academic career, Katie maintained her professional career by playing with various community and professional orchestras including the Casco Bay Chamber Orchestra in Portland, Maine, the Dubuque Symphony in Iowa, and the Ensemble Orchestrale Lyon Region in France. In 1994, she embarked on a four-year long tenure with the Romanian State Opera of Timisoara as the principal oboe. During this time, Katie also played throughout Europe with the Timisoara Philharmonic and the Europa Symphony, as well as playing accompaniment for the Bolshoi Ballet during their summer residency in Graz, Austria. Since returning to Vermont in 1998, Katie has played principal oboe with the Burlington Chamber Orchestra as well as playing for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the Vermont Mozart Festival. She played her debut concert with the Burlington Ensemble and became principal oboe with the Vermont Philharmonic in 2011. Katie teaches private oboe lessons from her home in Bakersfield, VT.
